Today I got to spend some time working on Mister Two, trying to identify the source of a boost leak.
My first step to try and locate it, will be to replace some worn out couplers for the hot and cold pipes for the intercooler system on the car. I can visibly see some blow by on both couplers on the cold side, and the coupler that directly connects to the compressor side of the turbine had its fair share of oil on it, meaning the seals were far from ideal. Keeping with the theme of lazy previous owners, I imagine these have never been replaced in 22 years, and are definitely due for refreshing.
First, the cross members that add a bit of torsional rigidity came off, and given they were starting to show signs of oxidation and paint wear, have been sanded and primed, then rinsed and repainted. I am not looking for a perfect finish, but a little bit of metallic silver paint will freshen up the engine bay nicely.
Afterwards, the cold side pipes and couplers that connect to the throttle body came off.
Then, the hot pipe side was next, as well as BOV. It all came off fairly easily, and I proceeded to clean off any oil inside the piping (less than I expected, surprisingly, wasn't bad at all) with some brake cleaner. Next, it was time to replace what I'd removed.
Putting the new couplers on was a pain in the ass, especially with trying to reconnect the hot pipe to the mount after adding couplers. With a fair amount of loosening some of the couplers and wiggling, complete with swearing, it went back on.
Next, it was time for the cold side. This went fairly easily, and was much less hassle than the hot pipe was.
Here's the part that adds about 15hp-
Installed-
I drove it around the block to warm up, and hit peak boost in second and third to see if I'd still bog, worked like a charm. Proceeded to fill it up with premium and bring it back home.
Fin.

awesome! Glad you got that cleared up. It's good that those couplers are all replacafied. No more air leaks and some clean cross bars, so much win! Now go drink some water and Gatorade, hot Texas is hot.

I had a Shock Top, Shiner, and two bottles of water while I worked. I was sweating like a pig, for sure.

Did you replace the turbo coupling as well?

Yes. Throttle body to cold pipe, cold pipe to intercooler, intercooler to hot pipe, hot pipe to turbo compressor. I went with the stage 2 kit in black.

Gotta start somewhere! I am no expert on MR2s by any means, but eventually I'll figure them out :)

no hah, its the last of my mr2 part stash, unless you are local to the DC area and want a few quarts of new oil and maybe some other random stuff from the garage that I'm not taking with me

Random stuff could be interesting, what are we talking about?

stuff I can't ship, use, or dispose of in the trash can. Cleaning chemicals for cars and the garage, wax and compounding pastes, wood stains, misc hardware (nuts, bolts, etc).
